Yerba Maté is an extract or tea from the leaves of the tree Ilex paraguariensis, a native plant of South America.


Chemical Structure and Properties

Yerba Mate contains three xanthines (caffeine like compounds): caffeine (often referred to as mateine), theobromine and theophylline. The effect of these xanthines is reported to be different than the caffeine in coffee and therefore preferred by some.
Yerba Maté is often used with claims that it improves alertness and vitality, can help in weight management and that it contains essential minerals such as magnesium.
